Outdoor Play Area
Big Spaces. Big Adventures. Big Learning.
At nippers, outdoor learning is an essential part of our curriculum. Children need space to move, explore, investigate, take appropriate risks and experience the natural world first-hand.
Our purpose-built, all-weather garden provides opportunities to run, climb, balance, build, dig and investigate. Open-ended resources and natural materials encourage children to use their imaginations, work together and create their own adventures.
We believe children need opportunities to challenge themselves. Our educators support appropriate, managed risk, allowing children to climb, balance, negotiate different surfaces, move large objects and work out how to achieve things for themselves. These experiences build confidence, physical competence, resilience and problem-solving skills.
Our outdoor curriculum combines spontaneous exploration with a sequenced seasonal approach. Children might discover worms in the soil, investigate ice on a winter morning, watch leaves change colour or explore how water travels. Educators use these real experiences to introduce new vocabulary, questions and ideas.
Learning also extends beyond our gates through regular walks and trips into the local community, including parks, natural spaces, the library and other local places.
We want children to experience nature rather than simply learn about it – developing curiosity, confidence and a genuine connection with the world around them.
